Elongated cuts and layering have been a trend in collections for Spring/Summer 2013. We have seen a handful of designers do it exceptionally well such as Alexander Wang, Comme des Garçons and 3.1 Phillip Lim. The Navy Pullover does an excellent job with balancing a dark and layered aesthetic with a cut for warmer weather. The short-sleeve sweatshirt has been constructed from a soft French terry and upgraded with a poplin shirt tail sewn in at the waist.

Alexandre Mattiussi’s brand, Ami, has been catching our attention for the last two seasons. After working at Givenchy, Dior and Marc Jacobs, in 2011 Mattiussi started his own brand. Ami creates some exceptional pieces for men to wear everyday. The brand also takes a conscious effort to leave no room for pretention in their experience.
For Spring/Summer 2013, Ami’s collection includes their Bird Print Motif which can be seen on a range of clothing and accessories. We especially like the shorts and certainly support going all out with the whole matching outfit.
Ami’s Bird Print Shorts and matching button up shirt are available at Roden Gray.

We recently visited the Comme des Garçons New York store to experience their range of collections and brands including Junya Watanabe, Homme Plus, BLACK and SHIRT. Amongst a range of inspired pieces, the Patchwork Print t-shirt from Comme des Garçons SHIRT was one of the standouts that combines a unique design with an everyday silhouette. The t-shirt has been crafted in France with an all-over patchwork print combined with a striped fabric at the bottom.

Common Projects continues to inspire us through their existence as well as with the introduction of new models every season. A new and understated option for SS13 is the Tennis Shoe. It is slim and clean; similar to the Achilles Low while providing a nice contrast of materials and tonal stitching in off-white.
Available now at Dover Street Market.

The term Pointillism was first coined by art critics in the late 1880s to ridicule the works of artists who painted in this style. This approach involves painting dots of colour in a pattern to form an image. The term pointillism has been resilient through history and is now used without its earlier mocking connotation. If it comes up in conversation, inform others that the style is also known as Neo-impressionism and Divisionism.
Maison Martin Margiela has taken cues from this artistic style in a printed t-shirt design for SS13. The Italian-made t-shirt features an all-over, multi-coloured pattern that creates a floral aesthetic. The piece contains a range of colours that work nicely together to create a great overall result that avoids being overwhelming.

The Lamina Back Pack is a great example of Visvim’s Japanese approach to design. It is understated while maintaining a thoughtful attention to detail and quality. The bag has been constructed from a KONBU nylon upper and a washed leather base; these materials provide uncompromised durability. Beyond this, the back pack has an ergonomic fit, padded straps, waterproof zippers and a laptop sleeve. The bag certainly has not sacrificed function for its impeccable form.
Available now at End.

Nike has been one of the most interesting fashion brands to follow in the last year. Beyond the gym, Nike has been making fashion headlines with the Flyknits, Gyakusou, and the Inneva Woven.
The Inneva Wovens were one of the most truly novel shoes we saw in 2012. They seemed to take no hints from competing brands. We are happy to see Nike using this new woven structure in a variety of shoes; most recently the Roshe Run Woven.
Available soon at 21 Mercer.

Marc Jacobs has been encouraging men to wear kilts for years. He has supported the initiative so much that it has become part of his signature dress code. It is interesting to see how many elements of women’s apparel and grooming have made their way into menswear in our lifetime versus pieces that are still resisted. The kilt has been developing more traction in menswear lately amongst the early adopters and the bravest in cities such as New York and Tokyo.
On the Watch The Throne tour, Kanye West established himself as an ambassador for the new look. He wore his Riccardo Tisci designed, Givenchy kilt every night of the tour over leather pants. For Spring/Summer 2013, Givenchy has created another variation of the kilt. The Skirt-Front Bermuda Shorts provide a good stepping stone for those looking to enter the new territory of menswear. They are black, cotton shorts with a kilt facade overlaying the front. They provide the appearance of a kilt, the familarity of shorts, and the ambiguity to divert critics.
